This very obliging Blue Tit demonstrates the way that members of the tit family tackle the task of eating a live mealworm. They always start just behind the head, often discarding it, to immobilise the worm. Being fussy eaters they then pull out the long gut, obviously not to their taste, before proceeding to eat the rest of the mealworm. You may notice that this bird has a tick on its breast; I have seen an increase in the number of birds with ticks over the last few years, particularly the tit family
