Unlike the loud territory making song, sung from a prominent vantage point, the quiet melodious subsong, sung through a closed bill, is usually performed from the depths of a hedge or shrub. The robin, not a hand tamed one, was filmed at less than 5ft away and almost appeared to be directing his song at me. It could have been rehearsing its repertoire, singing just for the pleasure of it or even chatting to me! I have not yet found a definitive explanation of this behaviour, any suggestions welcomed.
